Kernow Grain
Limited

Kernow Grain was established on a green field site in 1998 and now has a 14,500t storage capacity with the potential for cost effective expansion to 20,000t.

Storage is silo based with 16 silos for storing a wide variety of crops.

The store runs two continuous flow driers each with a 21t/hour capacity. Full cleaning and grading facilities are also available, including a four-screen rotary drum grader.

All grain is fully analysed on intake. Moisture, nitrogen, protein and oil contents are measured using an Infratec analyser calibrated and continuously checked as part of a testing 'ring'.

Grain is then held in ventilated silos before pre-cleaning prior to drying and storage.

Grain temperatures are carefully monitored throughout storage and managed using forced air ventilation.

"Kernow Grain is a key catalyst in the development of combinable crop production and storage in the far south-west and the Board continue to investigate opportunities to add value for the benefit of members.

Further store expansion would help reduce unit costs and enable us to develop and capture added value markets, such as Cornish milling wheat for Ginsters, ensuring better traceability and professional storage in the food chain.

Co-operative storage can add real flexibility to a farm business. It impacts on labour requirements at harvest, crop rotations as well as the opportunity to grow niche crops all of which can raise total farm profitability."
